If you have heard a child count to 15 or 16, it does not mean that they have understood the quantities of those numbers. Maria Montessori, to make it easier for children to understand, separated the concepts of quantity from that of symbols. (Eg quantity=*** and symbol=3)
Carved numbers help the child learn the number symbols from 0 to 9.
To introduce carved numbers to the child, you will start with three numbers at a time (with younger children you may want to start with just numbers one and two).
Presentation Stages:
1. Whenever you show him a symbol, feel it as it is written. Then it’s the child’s turn.
2. After showing three symbols, you can then play with questions like ‘Where is number 5? Grope it! Can you show me 7? Grope it! Place 6 on this side? Make it up!” Shuffle them and ask it again!
3. Ask him to name the symbols for you. “Who is that?” “How did you say that? Louder, I did not hear! We want him to say it confidently, to feel confident! Don’t forget, it is a game, not learning task! We do not put pressure to the child!
